The Dragon Boat Festival in English
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival in Chinese, is one of the most significant traditional holidays in China. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, it carries deep cultural and historical significance. The festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period over 2,000 years ago. When his kingdom was invaded, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River out of despair and loyalty to his homeland. Legend has it that local villagers paddled boats and threw rice dumplings into the river to keep fish away from his body.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is marked by a variety of activities, including dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), and hanging calamus and mugwort to ward off evil spirits. Dragon boat racing is perhaps the most iconic event associated with the holiday. Teams of rowers paddle their long, colorful boats in sync while spectators cheer them on. This activity not only honors Qu Yuan but also fosters community spirit and teamwork.
Zongzi is another central tradition. These pyramid-shaped dumplings are filled with a mix of ingredients such as glutinous rice, meat, peanuts, or sweet fillings like red bean paste. Families often gather to prepare zongzi together, passing down recipes from generation to generation. The festival also serves as an opportunity for people to spend time with loved ones and celebrate the arrival of summer.
In recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has gained international recognition, with events held around the world. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Chinese culture and the universal appeal of unity, remembrance, and celebration. Whether enjoyed locally or abroad, the Dragon Boat Festival remains a cherished tradition that connects people across generations and cultures.
